During Your Studies

On this page you will find information that is useful during your studies at LMU's English Department ("Institut für Englische Philologie"). This is general information that is independent of the degree program. For specific information, please consult the subpages of the respective degree programs.

Start of Studies

To make it easier for you to start your studies, we offer program-specific information events for first-year students every semester.

If you have any questions about your (English) degree program, the Student Advisory Service team of the English Department will be happy to help you. Questions about the content of individual courses and the examinations taking place in them should be addressed directly to the teachers of the respective courses.

For certain examination matters (e.g. compensation for disadvantages ("Nachteilsausgleich"), withdrawal due to illness ("Prüfungsrückrittt"), deadline extensions, issuing of certificates and transcripts, etc.), the Examination Office for Humanities and Social Sciences (PAGS) is the right point of contact. Students of "Wirtschaftspädagogik II" should contact the Information and Service Centre - Exam Office for Business Studies and Economics (ISC) in such cases.

The Office of the University Registrar is responsible for questions relating to enrolment or re-enrolment, leave of absence from studies, etc. The Central Student Advisory Office will be happy to answer general questions about your studies that go beyond the subject of English.

An overview of other central counselling and support offices at Faculty 13 and LMU can be found here.

As a student, you have access to the LMU University Library and all associated subject libraries as well as the Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek. These libraries also provide an extensive range of digital resources and offer tutorials and training courses. Two other libraries that are of particular interest to you as an English student are the Shakespeare Research Library and the Lyrik Kabinett. Students interested in teaching English as a foreign language will find extensive resources and interesting events in the TEFL Lab.

If you need advice and support on academic writing, you are in good hands at the LMU Writing Center.

You can attend IT courses at the IT Centre for Language and Literature Studies (ITZ). You can also use the PC workstations there.

The LMU Language Center ("Sprachenzentrum") offers language courses in many different languages.

Career-related workshops and seminars are offered by LMU's Career Service. You can also find out about career prospects specifically for students of linguistics and literature at the "Praxiskolloquium" organised by Faculty 13.

Planning your Studies

  • Modules are the basic (abstract) course format in our degree programs.
  • Each semester, one or more specific courses correspond to the same abstract module. If there are several courses on offer for a module, you can and must only attend one of these specific courses and take the module examination there.

Multi-part modules in which the parts are examined in a joint module examination are a special case. In this case, one course for each module part must be attended in the same semester. Information on which modules this applies to and how the module examination is organized can be found on the page for your degree program.

  • The same specific course can also be assigned to several modules in the same or in several different degree programs; depending on the module, the examination then looks different for different groups of students. For example, module P 3.1 in the Bachelor's prgram "Anglistik" corresponds to module P 2.1 in the Gymnasium teaching degree; i.e. students of both subjects sit the same courses together, but may sit different examinations at the end of the semester.

It is important that you know which module you are attending a particular course as! How to check this in LSF is explained in section 1 of the information sheet on examinations (PDF, 174 KB).

  • A distinction is made between compulsory modules (P) and elective modules (WP):
    • Compulsory modules (P) must be attended by all students on a degree program.
    • In the case of elective modules (WP), you can (and must) choose which of several possible alternative modules you would like to take according to a specific selection rules. You can find more information on this here and on the subpage for your degree program.

  • There are study plans (“checklists”) for each degree program, which you can download from the page for your degree program
  • These checklists are intended as a planning aid for your studies: they provide an overview of all the modules to be completed as part of your degree program, together with a recommendation as to which modules are best taken in which semester. You will also find a summary of the most important information on selection rules for elective modules (WPs), admission requirements between modules, etc.
  • It is possible to deviate from the semester recommendations if necessary, as long as all regulations (especially admission requirements for modules) are adhered to. If you have any questions about planning your studies, please contact the Student Advisory Service of the English Department.

It is best to download the checklist for your degree program at the beginning of your studies and document your progress by ticking off all the modules you have passed.

A standard duration of study ("Regelstudienzeit") is defined for each degree course, within which you can realistically and sensibly complete your studies. Our study plans/checklists as well as certain examination regulations (e.g. the free examination attempt ( "Freier Prüfungsversuch")) or funding programs and scholarships are based on this framework.

When planning your individual course of study - which may differ from the recommendations in the checklists for various reasons - it is particularly important to know the maximum duration of study ("Höchststudiendauer"), i.e. the latest date by which you must have completed certain or all examinations.

In the teacher education degree programs ("Lehramtstudiengänge") there is a minimum duration of study ("Mindeststudiendauer"), so a minimum number of semesters that you must have completed before you can register for the state exam.

Information regarding important deadlines and the standard and maximum length of study in the B.A. "Anglistik" can be found on the corresponding degree program page. Please pay special attention to the information regarding the Basic Qualifying Examination ("Grundlagen- und Orientierungsprüfung (GOP)").

Information regarding important deadlines and the standard and maximum duration of study in the M.A. "English Studies" can be found on the corresponding degree program page.

An overview of the minimum, standard and maximum duration of study for the different teacher education degree programs can be found on the page of the "Münchner Zentrum für Lehrerbildung" (MZL).

Please note the so-called "Corona semester regulation", which could affect you if you were regularly enrolled in one or more of the following semesters: summer semester 2020, winter semester 2020/21, summer semester 2021, winter semester 2021/22.
The following applies here: summer semester 2020, winter semester 2020/21, summer semester 2021 and winter semester 2021/22 do not count as semesters of study when it comes to the calculation of the standard and maximum duration of study.

In most of the English degree programs it is obligatory to complete a longer stay abroad in an English speaking country (as part of the module The Intercultural Project (ICP)).

Please plan the ICP early on in your course of your studies - even if the module is formally listed for a relatively high semester in the checklist and the examination and study regulations.

There are several compulsory internships as part of the teacher education degree programs ("Lehramtsstudiengänge"). You can find an overview on the pages of the "Münchner Zentrum für Lehrerbildung" (MZL).

Neither the B.A. "Anglistik" nor the M.A. "English Studies" have obligatory internships. It is recommended as part of career orientation to complete one or even multiple voluntary internships. Feel free to get advice from the LMU Career Service.

An internship can also be completed in combination with the Intercultural Project as an Internship abroad.

The Student Advisory Service of the English Department regularly offers information events to help students in various phases of their studies with further planning.

The following information refers to a change of degree program within the degree programmes offered by the English Department (e.g. from B.A. "Anglistik" to English teacher education ("Lehramt") or between different English teacher education degree programs). If you would like to change to another subject, please contact the Student Information Service (SIS), the Central Student Advisory Office (ZSB) and the Study Advisory Service team of the degree program you would like to change to.

To change your degree program, you must register at the Office of University Registrar by the deadline and with all the necessary documents.

If you are transferring from a degree program not subject to the aptitude assessment procedure (EFV) to a degree program which is subject to the aptitude assessment procedure (EFV), you must submit a complete application for admission to the aptitude assessment procedure (EFV) by the deadline. This also applies if you voluntarily took the C-Test at the beginning of your studies.

  • Documents issued by the English Studies Student Advisory team (on request via the contact form) are:
    • Updated aptitude certificates ("Eignungsbescheide")
    • Forms for the recognition of academic achievements and applications for placement in a higher semester if credits from your previous degree program can be recognized

Please consider that it takes 2-3 weeks for such requests to be processed.

It is possible to take up another degree program in addition to your previous one (e.g. Bachelor's degree in addition to a teacher education degree); general information on this can be found on the pages of the Office of the University Registrar.

A double major ("Doppelstudiengang") within English Studies (e.g. English teacher education and B.A. "Anglistik") requires (usually several times over the course of your studies) the "cross-recognition" of credits from one degree program to the other.

If you are planning to take up a double major within English Studies, please contact the Study Advisory Service of the English Department ("Fachstudienberatung") early on.

Semester Planning & Course Registration

With a few exceptions (see below), courses for all English degree programs (B.A. "Anglistik", M.A. "English Studies", English teacher education degrees ("Lehramt")) can only be signed up to via LSF. Instructions can be found here, as well as on the information sheet on course registration (see button on the right).

Course registration is possible within the registration period. Any spots still available after this period will be open to the registration for leftover places.

Places will be reserved for first semester students who are not yet able to enrol during the registration period. You will receive information on course registration at the various first semester information events.

Unfortunately, for technical reasons, students of teacher education degrees who are taking the additional subject ("Erweiterungsfach") "Fremdsprachliche Qualifikation" cannot sign up to courses via LSF. Please contact the lecturers of the courses you would like to attend directly via email.

It is possible to attend courses that are not planned for your degree program as a guest upon request to the lecturers if places are available; however, participation in examinations and the acquisition of ECTS points are then excluded, and certificates of attendance are not issued.

The following courses, or rather types of courses, cannot be registered for as described above:

  • The Intercultural Project (ICP)
  • Excursion courses or certain interdisciplinary courses: Please note the information and deadline in the course description listed in the course catalog ("Vorlesungsverzeichnis") on LSF.
  • Additional curricula, which are not part of the module plan (e.g. exam course for TEFL): Please note the information within the course registration under "Zusätzliche Lehrangebote (incl. Doktorandenkolloquium)" listed in the course catalog ("Vorlesungsverzeichnis") on LSF.

  • In many cases, you can only take the exam for a module if you have already passed a certain other module (you can find detailed information on this in the checklists and the examination and study regulations for your respective degree program and in the LSF online university catalog under each module (sub-)heading).
  • If you do not meet such an admission requirement for a module, you cannot register for the examination at the end of the semester and therefore cannot earn ECTS points for the course.
  • If you are not sure at the time of the course registration period whether you have actually passed an examination that is part of the admission requirements (e.g. introductory course modules as a prerequisite for seminars), you should still register for the course. However, if you then discover that you do not actually meet the prerequisites because you have not passed an examination, please make sure you deregister from the course (see point 8 in theinformation sheet on course registration (PDF, 188 KB)); you will then not be qualified to attend this course and will not be able to register for the examination.

Please note: LSF will not warn you at the time of course registration or in the period between course registration and examination registration if you are not qualified to register or attend a course you wish to sign up to! It is your own responsibility to ensure that you meet the admission requirements.

If the different parts of a module are examined in a joint examination, then all parts must be taken and attended in the same semester.

The modules to which this applies in your degree program are listed on the pages of the degree programs and are also explained in the checklists linked there and in the examination and study regulations (PStOs).

Please note the selection rules for elective modules in your degree program. You can find more detailed information on the page for your degree program and in the checklists and examination and study regulations (PStOs) provided there.

In principle, the following applies to all degree programs:

  • The choice of a WP option is irrevocable from the first examination attempt (i.e. after failing or not taking the examination, you must choose the same module again; you can no longer switch to another WP option)
  • For multi-part modules (even if the module parts are examined individually), the selection of a module part always corresponds to the selection of the entire module (e.g. if you select WP 3.1, you must also take WP 3.2 in the course of your studies)
  • No more than the ECTS credits stipulated in the respective examination and study regulations can be earned in the compulsory elective area. Courses with more ECTS credits can be taken, but it is then no longer possible to register for an examination if the examination would cause you to exceed the number of ECTS credits permitted.
For example, if you only need 3 ECTS credits in the WP area and take a course with 6 ECTS credits, you will not be able to register for the examination for this course (i.e. you will not be able to take the remaining 3 ECTS credits). So please check how many ECTS you still need in the WP area when you register and select your courses accordingly. (You are of course welcome to attend additional WP courses voluntarily, but then do not take part in any examinations).

Students of degree programmes offered by the English Department and, if applicable, students of other subjects at LMU can generally attend courses at the English Department as guests without having to provide proof of performance or take an examination. This applies in particular to student enrolled in English teacher education degree ("Lehramt") programs who wish to attend certain courses in preparation for their state exams, even if they can no longer earn ECTS credits.

To participate as a guest, please contact the lecturers of the courses you would like to attend directly. Please understand that students who need to take these classes as part of their regular study plans have priority if demand is high.

We are aware that students with a child/children and students with care responsibilities often cannot be very flexible in their timetabling. We therefore offer advance booking for these student groups.

Should you wish to take advantage of this: Please first book your desired courses in the first few days of the course registration period. Please then contact us before the end of the registration period via the Student Advisory Service team's contact form and let us know which courses you have taken (please state your degree program, module number and course number). We will then be happy to prioritize your admission to these courses.

Exam Registration and Exams

Information sheet exams and exam registration (PDF, 174 KB)
Download file

In order to be allowed to take an examination and thus earn ECTS points (and possibly a grade) for a module, you must have registered for this examination. Important: Registering for examinations is different from course registration.

An "examination" is any type of assessment defined in the examination and study regulations (i.e. not only written and oral examinations, but also assignments, exercises, thesis papers, etc.). Any work submitted without registration is invalid.

How you can register for examinations is explained in the information sheet on examinations linked here. Exam registration is binding. If you do not show up for a registered examination or do not submit an examination paper, the examination is deemed to have been failed.

Special registration rules, deadlines and procedures apply for final theses (Bachelor's theses, Master's theses and "Zulassungsarbeiten") and for the state exam.

  • Examinations include all types of assessments, i.e. not only written and oral examinations, but also assignments, essays, thesis papers, portfolios, exercises, etc.
  • Which type of exam is to be taken in a specific course for a specific module is determined and communicated by the lecturer of the relevant course based on the options defined by the examination and study regulations (PStOs) applicable to the relevant degree program.
  • The teacher/examiner is also responsible for organizing the exam and providing you with all relevant information about exams (requirements, exam date/submission date, exam duration/scope, form of submission, etc.).

  • The examination dates (dates for written and oral exams, submission dates for written works) are set by the teachers of the respective courses and communicated by them.
  • Generally, on-site exams take place during the course period in the last week of the semester. If a different date is designated (then usually during the semester break), it will be communicated early on by the teachers (in most cases it will already be in the course commentary within the LSF-course catalogue).

You can also see all examination and submission deadlines in LSF when you register for the examination. Please make sure that you can meet these deadlines when you register for the examination. If there are any problems with overlapping exam dates, please contact the lecturers of the respective classes and the Study Advisory Service team at the English Department as early as possible.

The most common causes are:

  1. You do not meet the admission requirements ("Zulassungsvoraussetzungen") for the examination for which you wish to register; please check with the help of the checklist and/or examination and study regulations (PStO) for your degree program whether you have already passed all module examinations that are prerequisites for the examination you wish to register for at the time of registering for the examination (i.e. in a previous semester); if this is not the case, you cannot register for the examination and cannot take it.
  2. You have exhausted the options in an elective area, i.e. you cannot register for the examination because you have already registered for and/or taken the examination for an alternative module in the current or a previous semester (see also information on elective modules on the page for your degree program).
  3. The course you wish to register for will be examined together with another course in a joint module examination. Here you can only register for the overall module examination (see also information on multi-part modules on the page for your degree program).
  4. You have already passed the module examination or partial module examination for which you wish to register in another course in a previous semester (this examination will then appear on your transcript as BE, with a grade if applicable); each module examination/partial module examination can only be taken once. (An exception is the repetition for grade improvement in the B.A. "Anglistik").
  5. You are only missing points in the free area of the English teacher education degree program ("Freier Bereich im Lehramt"). Due to a known technical problem in LSF, you may receive an error message stating that you are no longer eligible to take the exam. Please do not be alarmed! In this case, please contact the Study Advisory Service of the English Department or the responsible person at PAGS.
  6. You have finally failed one or more module examinations and therefore finally failed the degree program (indicated by the note EN next to the relevant module(s) in your transcript). In this case, please contact the Study Advisory Service of the English Department as soon as possible to discuss what options you now have.

As a general rule, please contact the Study Advisory Service team of the English Department, ideally after clarifying points 1 and 5, and please do so within the examination registration period. Please include the error message you receive in LSF with your request or attach a screenshot of the page on which the error message appears.

  • If you realize before the examination date that you have forgotten to register and it is the first time that you have forgotten to do so, please contact the Study Advisory Service team of the English Department. They will then check whether a late registration is possible as an exception and on a one-off basis.
  • If you only realize on or after the exam date, the exam is considered as not registered. You will then not be able to take the exam. If you have already taken an examination (e.g. taken a written exam, taken an oral exam or submitted a written assignment), this assignment is invalid.

  • You can withdraw from examinations via LSF up to 3 days before the examination date without giving reasons (example: For an examination on 7.2.2024, 4.2.2024 was the day of the last possible withdrawal; the exact examination time, e.g. 7.2.2024, 2-4 p.m., has no relevance for the withdrawal period, so you can still withdraw the whole day on the day of the last possible withdrawal).
  • In the event of illness (or other reasons for which you are not responsible), it is also possible to withdraw at a later date (up to the examination date). Special regulations apply here, which you can read about on the PAGS website. There you can also find a form that you can use to request a withdrawal and submit the doctor's note digitally.
  • In the case of term papers and other examinations to be submitted by a certain date (thesis papers, essays, etc.), an extension can be requested from the PAGS as an alternative to withdrawing from the examination.

Important: Applications to withdraw from examinations or for extensions must always be submitted directly to the PAGS, not to the examiners or the academic counseling office. If you have any questions about withdrawing from examinations due to illness/getting an extension, please contact the PAGS administrator responsible for your degree program.

The ISC is responsible for students studying English as part of Business Education II (Wirtschaftspädagogik II).

As soon as the examination results are available, you can view them in your transcript on LSF.

If you have any questions or would like to make an appointment to inspect the exam, please contact the examiner.

  • You can find information regarding compensation of disadvantages for exams here.

If you are unable to take examinations in the scheduled time or in the scheduled form due to an impairment or chronic illness, please submit an application for compensation for disadvantages ("Antrag auf Nachteilsausgleich") sufficiently in advance of such examinations (at the latest when registering for an examination or at the latest one month before the exam date of the respective examination).

  • The possibilities and exact conditions for retaking a failed examination are noted in the respective examination and study regulations (PStOs) for each individual degree program for each individual module.
  • The best way to do this is to look for the relevant module in the so-called "Anlage 2", which is the yellow and white table at the end of the examination and study regulations (PStOs).

As a general rule, retaking an examination is always linked to repeating the corresponding course, i.e. there are no repeat examinations in the same semester.

A repetition to improve grades after passing an examination is only possible for some modules in the B.A. "Anglistik".

Integrity and learning and adhering to the principles of good scientific practice are central elements of all studies.

Compliance with these principles is therefore expected for every examination and must be confirmed by you by submitting a signed declaration of autonomy for assignments and other work to be submitted.

Violations of the principles of good scientific practice, e.g. cheating or plagiarism in examinations, will be sanctioned accordingly.

You will receive department-specific instructions and information on the subject of academic work during the courses and, where applicable, on the webpages of the subject areas.

You can also find out more about the topic of good scientific practice and possible sanctions for non-compliance with these principles in episodes 18 and 19 of the docPhil Podcast.

Additional credits ("Zusatzleistungen") are examinations that were completed during enrollment at LMU in a B.A. or M.A. degree program, but are not required by the examination and study regulations (PStOs) and are therefore not included in the Bachelor's or Master's examination.

A separate certificate can be issued for these additional credits.

Final Theses and "Zulassungsarbeiten"

Information on final theses can be found on the page of the respective degree program or on the subpage for the state examination. Please note the specific registration procedures and deadlines.

Degree/Certificates

Bachelor's and Master's degree programs are completed when you have passed all module examinations and thus earned all the required ECTS credits. There is no separate final examination.

The final certificates are issued by the PAGS and can be collected there in person on request. As a rule, a processing time of approx. 4 weeks is to be expected for the preparation of the final documents.

For Bachelor's graduates, there is usually a graduation/certificate award ceremony organized by the English Studies department. For Master's graduates, there is an annual graduation/certificate award ceremony organized by Faculty 13.

The degree in the teacher education degree programs is the first state exam, for which you can register after passing all module examinations and submitting the "Zulassungsarbeit".

The ministry (Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Unterricht und Kultus) will inform you of the results of the state examination by mail.

An examination ceremony for teaching graduates is usually organized by the "Münchner Zentrum für Lehrerbildung" (MZL).

Specific Certificates

The Study Advisory Team of the English Department issues the following English language certificates for students enrolled in a degree program at the English Department upon request:

  • LMU language certificate: This certificate is usually valid for Erasmus, ProsaLMU and LMUexchange applications. Some foreign universities accept the LMU language certificate as part of their application procedure.
  • DAAD language certificate for applying for scholarships from the "Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst" (DAAD).
  • If applicable, a letter confirming that English is the language of instruction in our degree programs or an informal C1 certificate, e.g. for applications for English-language Master's degree programs.

The English Department's Study Advisory Service team issues these certificates exclusively for the purposes stated and only for students who are currently enrolled in a degree program at the English Department (B.A., M.A., teaching degree). All other students should contact the Language Center ("Sprachenzentrum").

The PAGS issues BAföG certificates of achievement according to §48 BAföG.

As a rule, the certificate of achievement should be submitted after the fourth semester. In this case, at least the following ECTS credit points must have been achieved in the first four semesters in order for a positive certificate to be issued:

  • in the B.A. major subject "Anglistik": 54 ECTS credits
  • in the teaching subject of the teacher education degree programs ("Lehramt Englisch"): 36 ECTS credits

Since a certificate of achievement can only be issued if the credits from the fourth semester have been entered in the LSF, which may be after the deadline set by the BAföG office for submitting the certificate of achievement, it may be sensible and advisable to apply for the certificate of achievement during the fourth semester on the basis of the (fully entered) credits up to and including the third semester (e.g. in May or July if the summer semester is your fourth semester). In this case, at least the following ECTS credit points must be achieved for a positive certificate to be issued:

  • in the B.A. major subject "Anglistik: 36 ECTS credits
  • in the teaching subject of the teacher education degree programs ("Lehramt Englisch"): 24 ECTS credits

These certificates are issued by the PAGS on request.

If you are transferring from one English degree program to another within LMU, the University Registrar's Office will only accept aptitude certificates from the same or previous year. Should your certificate be older, please contact the EFV coordinator and ask for an updated certificate.
