Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)

The Chair of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) at the Department of English and American Studies at LMU Munich engages with current developments in TEFL research and practice. It brings together perspectives from second language acquisition as well as the teaching of literature, culture, and media. Central questions guide this work: How are research and classroom practice connected? How can theory inform teaching methodology? And how do educational policies and curricula shape classroom realities? These questions point to a key insight of TEFL: there are no universal “recipes” for teaching languages.

For this reason, our teaching emphasises critical reflection on the relationship between theory and practice. Students explore key areas of language teaching, analyse classroom processes, and develop competences for contemporary communicative English language teaching. They learn to evaluate and adapt teaching approaches to diverse contexts and to reflect on their role as future teachers of English.
