Staying abroad
A longer stay abroad offers you the unique opportunity to optimize your communication skills in a foreign language while gaining a wide range of intercultural experiences. You will benefit immensely from both on a personal level and in terms of your professional future. That is why a longer stay in an English-speaking country—the "Intercultural Project"—is an obligatory component of almost all degree programs offered by the English Department.
Various options for completing this obligatory stay abroad can be found further down on this page and on the LMU International Office website. Here you will also find inspiration if you would like to gain further experience abroad beyond the Intercultural Project.
You can also find out more about the many different opportunities for studying abroad in an English-speaking country at our information events and/or by making an appointment with the Study Advisory team and/or the Intercultural Project team.In addition, advice and support is offered by the International Office. An overview of options that are particularly suitable for students studying to become teachers can be found on the website of the MZL (Münchner Zentrum für Lehrerbildung).

Other Types of Stays Abroad
A stay as an assistant teacher / "Fremdsprachenassistenzkraft (FSA)" is especially interesting for students of the teacher education degree programs ("Lehramt").
The International Office (contact: Dr. David) also offers a few programs that are a combination of working as an assistant teacher (usually at the German Department of the respective university) and studying abroad (e.g. at the University of Alberta, Edmonton (Canada) or at Lewis & Clark College and Reed College; Portland/Oregon).
You can find more information on this topic on the websites of the International Office.
