Recognition of Academic Achievements

The basis for the recognition of academic achievements is the equivalence of the competence goals achieved or to be achieved. We - the Student Advisory team at the English Department - will be happy to check the extent to which this is the case on the basis of your documents and support you with the application process. In principle, you as the applicant can decide for each course whether you would like to apply for recognition or not.

We can only advise you on the recognition of credits for degree programmes offered by the English Department. For possible recognition for other subject areas (2nd subject, educational science or internships in the teaching profession, Bachelor's minor subject, etc.), please contact the academic counseling team ("Fachstudienberatung") responsible for the respective subject area.

Depending on the scope of the recognized achievements, recognition of achievements can also result in placement in a higher semester ("Höherstufung"). We will also be happy to support you with prepariung the necessary application documents.

As a rule, credits must be applied for within the first semester after enrolling in the new degree program or after returning from a period of study abroad.

Please send us your request - ideally together with all the documents listed below in digital form - using our contact form. Please allow for a processing time of up to 3 weeks (possibly longer in the case of subsequent grading).

Recognition of credits...

If you are transferring from an English (or comparable) degree program at a different university to an English degree program at LMU, or if you have previously studied Anglistik/English Studies, it is very likely that your academic achievements can be recognized.

Ideally, please contact the Study Advisory team of the English Department before you enrol at LMU, as such recognitions often result in enrolment in a higher semester, and you can then enrol in the correct (higher) semester straight away.

Please send us the following information and documents in digital form with your enquiry:

  • Relevant documents from your previous degree program(s) (transcript of records, degree certificate, if applicable)
  • if available: (links to) information on the degree program(s) from which you would like to have credits recognized (e.g. examination and study regulations, module handbooks, course descriptions, information on examination forms, etc.).

Please note that you must also apply for the aptitude assessment procedure (EFV; for B.A. "Anglistik", English teacher education degree programs ("Lehramt Englisch")) or the selection procedure (EV; for M.A. "English Studies") in good time if you change universities or have already started or completed a previous English Studies degree program.

As a general rule, achievements from non-English courses cannot be recognized for English degree courses. The same applies to credits from (general) English language courses.

In some cases, however, recognition is possible, especially if you have attended English Studies courses in your previous degree program. Some courses from American Studies, General Linguistics or General and Comparative Literature may also be recognized for an English degree program.

Ideally, please contact the Study Advisory team of the English Department before you transfer to LMU, as such recognitions often result in enrolment in a higher semester and you can then enrol in the correct (higher) semester straight away.

  • Please send us the following information and documents in digital form with your enquiry:

  • All relevant documents from your previous degree program(s) (transcript of records, degree certificate, if applicable)
  • if available: (Links to) information on the degree program(s) from which you would like to have credits recognized (e.g. examination and study regulations, module handbooks, course descriptions, information on examination forms, etc.).

Please note that even if you change your subject within the LMU you must submit a valid notification that you have passed or are eligible for most English degree programs. Please remember that you must apply for the relevant aptitude assessment procedure (EFV; for B.A. "Anglistik", English teacher education degree programs ("Lehramt Englisch")) or the selection procedure (EV; for M.A. "English Studies"). If you have already passed the EFV or EV at an earlier point in time, please contact the Study Advisory team. They can then issue you an updated aptitude certificate.

If you wish to switch from one degree program to another within the range of degree programs offered by the English Department or if you want to enrol in two English studies degree programms in parallel ("Doppelstudium"), your achievements can usually be fully recognized for the new/second degree program (of course, taking into account any course-specific differences).

Ideally, please contact the Student Advisory team before you transfer to a different study program, as such recognitions often result in enrolment in a higher semester and you can then enrol in the correct (higher) semester straight away.

Please also note that in the case of some degree changes, originally ungraded achievements must be recognized with a grade. In these cases, we make every effort to determine grades retrospectively. However, we cannot guarantee this in all cases. If no grade can be subsequently determined, either recognition with a grade of 4.0 or a waiver of recognition is possible.

If you wish to change from one degree program offered at the English Deparment to another, it is sufficient to write to us without submitting any further documents, stating which degree program you wish to change from and to which degree program you would like to change.

Please note that, as a rule, you must also submit a valid notification that you have passed the aptitude assessment procedure (EFV) for most English degree programs when changing subjects within the English Department. If you wish to change from a degree program not subject to the EFV to a degree program subject to the EFV, you must therefore apply for the EFV by the deadline. If you have already passed the EFV (not the C-Test only) at an earlier date, the Student Adisory team of the English Department will be happy to issue you an updated apititude certificate.

We will be happy to advise you regarding possible recognition of credits to be earned when you are planning your course(s) at the guest university. Such advice is even obligatory for ERASMUS exchange programs (which require issuing a Learning Agreement (PDF, 299 KB) before departure).

You can find a step-by-step instruction on how to proceed after your return in order to have your achievements from your studies abroad recognized in our information sheet (PDF, 207 KB).
