Before Your Studies

We are delighted that you are interested in studying with us! Whether it's a Bachelor's, teaching degree or Master's - no matter which program you choose from our wide selection, you will get to enjoy a diverse range of courses with us.

With us being a large institute with many researchers and lecturers, you have the opportunity to get to know many different areas of research and develop your own individual subject profile in the fields of Literary Studies, Modern and Historical Linguistics, and TEFL. Take a look at the current course catalog and the department websites!

You can also look forward to our extensive Language Practice and Cultural Studies program. Here you will work intensively with our native-speaker teachers on your language and intercultural skills and become an expert in the English-speaking cultural regions.

Please note: Participation in the aptitude assessment procedure (EFV) is mandatory for almost all undergraduate English Studies degree programs (B.A. "Anglistik", "Lehramt Englisch" (Teacher Education degree programs)). Admission to the M.A. "English Studies" requires passing the selection procedure (EV).

Choice of Study Program

Find out more about our undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses here and find out which course suits you best. Feel free to contact us at the English Department's Student Advisory Service with any questions - we look forward to hearing from you!

In the Bachelor's degree program (B.A. "Anglistik"), you will learn the theoretical and methodological foundations of the academic disciplines of English Literary Studies and English Linguistics, expand on these and apply your knowledge and skills in advanced courses in both areas before deciding on a specialisation in the final section of the degree program. You will acquire extensive linguistic and intercultural skills throughout the program.

In the English Teacher Education program ("Lehramt Englisch"), you will be prepared for a career as an English teacher through comprehensive subject-specific, didactic and linguistic training. When you choose your degree program, you also choose the type of school you would like to teach English for (within the Bavarian school system).

The Master's degree program "English Studies" prepares you for an academic career. It includes research-orientated courses from the following areas: Linguistics, Literature and Culture, and Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

On the subpages for the individual degree programs you will find detailed information on the program concepts and structures.

The Student Advisory Service team and representatives of the English Studies Student Council ("Fachschaft Anglistik") are on site for you every year at the LMU Campus Day. We look forward to meeting you there in person and informing you about our degree programs.

The LMU offers a trial program to all interested students. You are cordially invited to attend our courses listed in the trial course catalog. You are welcome to get an idea of the program, content and lecturers in English courses as part of "Studieren Probieren" or during the study orientation week!

Selection and Aptitude Assessment Procedures

With us, you will receive a scholarly and linguistic education at the highest level. To ensure that all our students have a good start and good prospects of success, we carry out an aptitude assessment procedure for almost all our undergraduate degree courses, in which linguistic aptitude in particular is checked. In addition to linguistic aptitude, admission to a Master's degree course also requires subject-specific aptitude. This is checked in a selection procedure. Prospective students for degree programs without an aptitude assessment procedure can take a language test (C-test) for self-assessment. Please make use of this offer!

Application, Enrollment, Admission

Applying for the aptitude assessment procedure or the Master's selection procedure at the Institute of English Philology is only one important step in the admission process.

The letter of aptitude, which you will receive after successfully completing the selection procedure for your degree program, must be submitted together with a number of other documents upon registration at LMU. You can find more information on the page linked on the right.

Please note that international students must also apply to the LMU International Office at a relatively early stage!

Transfer to LMU

Are you already studying English Studies or a comparable subject at another university (or have done so in the past) and would like to transfer to LMU? Would you like to change to an English degree program at LMU? We will be happy to check which of your previous achievements can be recognized and support you in submitting applications for recognition of academic achievements and, if necessary, placement in a higher semester.

Please note that you must also apply for the aptitude assessment procedure (B.A. "Anglistik", Teacher Education degree programs ("Lehramt")) or the selection procedure (M.A. "English Studies") in good time if you change subject/university!

If you have general questions about transferring to LMU, please contact the Study Information Service (SIS), the Central Student Advisory Office and/or the LMU Office of the University Registrar.
