Lecture by Gabriele von Arnim as part of the Erika Mann Lecture series, on the topic of “response-ability.”

Gabriele von Arnim was born in Hamburg in 1946 and now lives in Berlin. She studied, earned her doctorate, and lived in New York for ten years as a freelance journalist; she later wrote for publications such as “Die Zeit” and the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” and hosted television and radio programs. Her numerous works include “Life Is a Temporary State,” “The Comfort of Beauty,” and “Dear Grandchildren, or The Art of Optimism.”

Von Arnim will reflect on the concept of “response-ability” and ask what it means to be a citizen in the present day. How do we hold onto hope? How do we cultivate confidence?

The Erika Mann Lecture Series spotlights authors whose works make significant contributions to current social issues and who, like Erika Mann, inspire others with their fearless insight. As an author, journalist, cabaret artist, race car driver, world traveler, and style icon, Erika Mann was far ahead of her time: courageous, creative, progressive, and with a clear stance, Mann continues to inspire through her work to this day.
