Strengthening the Environmental Humanities

The project Strengthening the Environmental Humanities (2020–26) supports the permanent institutionalization of the Environmental Humanities (EH) at LMU Munich and is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation through its “Hochschule der Zukunft / University of the Future” program. The project was initiated and is directed by Christof Mauch. From 2020 to 2023, the project team, led by Dr. Anna Antonova and Dr. Hanna Straß-Senol, developed and formalized the curricula for the interdisciplinary Master’s Program Environment and Society, which was awarded the LMU Innovative Teaching Awardin 2023.

In its second phase, whch began in the winter semester of 2024–25, the project is expanding the role of environmental humanities at LMU and beyond through a number of initiatives. It includes the networking project One Book – Many Worlds, which features a series of academic and public-facing events on the humanistic aspects of climate change. Strengthening the Environmental Humanities has financed several academic workshops since 2022, and has hotsted four short-term visiting professors at the RCC since 2024.
