Environmental Studies Certificate Program

Overview

The Environmental Studies Certificate Program provides students from all disciplines with the opportunity to gain an additional interdisciplinary qualification in environmental studies. The international, interdisciplinary format and the workshops and lectures delivered by environmental researchers from all over the globe make this program the only one of its kind in Germany.

Students completing the two-year program will receive a certificate in environmental studies. The program is based on the idea that the complex interactions between environment and society cannot be adequately examined from the perspective of any individual discipline, but require trans- and interdisciplinary approaches.

It offers students the possibility to consider in conjunction topics that have until now often been approached in isolation: the various approaches which biologists and historians, ethicists and literary scholars, geographers and political scientists, philosophers and theologians have towards the relationship between humans and the environment.

The program opens up new academic and intellectual horizons, new career possibilities, and new ideas about the environment. In bringing students into dialogue with different disciplines (humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences), it offers new perspectives on our academic environments. The certificate program is open to all Master’s students, Diplom students and those studying to become school teachers (Lehramt).

The qualification, which is made up of 33 ECTS-credits spread across four semesters, is earned alongside the main degree subject. It allows students to look beyond the confines of their discipline and gives them a broader disciplinary base that is appreciated by employers both inside and outside of academia. The courses, in English and German, impart theory, methodology, and practical experience in disciplines such as environmental policy, environmental history, ethnology and human geography, environmental sociology, and environmental law.

The program offerings include a weekly lecture series in which faculty from different disciplines and institutions present their research on topics related to environmental studies.
