Professor John Ohala (1941 - 2020)

The IPS was saddened to learn of the death of John J. Ohala, Emeritus Professor of Linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley. John was inspirational in developing a model of sound change that was firmly anchored in the mechanisms of speech processing and relating this to phonological typology; his research also has had a great influence on our thinking at the IPS about this area over the years. He will be greatly missed.
