Multilingualism is a fundamental aspect of human societies, shaping communication, identity, and social structures. Dr. Lischweski's presentation explores multilingualism from different perspectives, including its role in historical and contemporary societies, its theoretical frameworks, and its implications for linguistic diversity.

The talk will first provide a practical definition of multilingualism and introduce key concepts such as linguistic landscape, linguistic ecology, and cross-linguistic encounters. These terms help us understand how languages interact within societies and how they reflect power dynamics, social integration, and identity formation. By examining multilingual settings, particularly within the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey, Dr. Lischewski will highlight the ways in which languages coexisted, evolved, and influenced one another.

Additionally, the presentation will address language policies, interventions, and the concept of linguicism, which refers to discrimination based on language. The discussion will also touch upon the role of linguistic mediators, such as lingua francas and multilingual writing systems, in fostering communication across diverse communities.

By taking an ecological perspective, Dr. Lischewski aims to illustrate how multilingualism is not merely a coexistence of different languages but a dynamic force shaping societies. Understanding these interactions is crucial for preserving linguistic diversity and counteracting language endangerment.
