“Fragments of the Forest: Hot Zones, Disease Ecologies, and the Changing Landscape of Environment and Health in West Africa” is a research project led by Prof. Dr. Gregg Mitman and supported by a European Research Council Advanced Grant (2021–26).
The project brings together an interdisciplinary team of researchers trained in conservation biology, environmental history, medical anthropology, medicine, molecular biology, and social anthropology to collectively explore the ecological, economic, political and social forces at play that have made fragments of the Guineans Forests of West Africa into so-called “hotspots" where emerging infectious disease threats, biodiversity conservation concerns, and resource extraction interests converge.
