CHEERS - Cultural HEritagE. Risks and Securing activities
2018–21
CHEERS (Cultural HEritagE. Risks and Securing activities) is a European project concerning the protection of cultural heritage sites that are exposed to environmental risks (natural disasters, climate change, etc.).
It has been recognized by the European Commission as a project contributing to the objectives of the European Year of Cultural Heritage.
THE STARTING POINT (WHY)
The Alps host an outstanding variety of material and immaterial cultural heritage which are key components of Alpine identity and strongly contribute to the local economies.
Natural disasters that affect Alpine territory, and which are likely to be exacerbated by climate change, represent a major threat to cultural heritage, in terms of asset safety and fruition. Risk assessment, hazard reduction, and disaster management focus attention on the protection of human lives and infrastructures, while the safeguard of cultural resources has not been properly addressed yet. The CHEERS project focuses on this gap.
THE OBJECTIVE (WHAT)
The project aims to enhance the protection of Alpine cultural resources, tackling the still neglected issue of the emergency management as well as possible damages due to natural hazards.
CHEERS will integrate know-how and on-field expertise in risk analysis, specifically addressing the cultural heritage conservation and valorization in emergency planning, supporting Alpine local communities in raising awareness and knowledge about the impact of natural risks on Cultural Heritage, and offering possible solutions to reduce the vulnerability of Cultural Assets.
RESULTS (HOW)
CHEERS will devise national and transnational tools, governance schemes, and intervention guidelines to reduce the vulnerability of Cultural Assets.
