Environmental transformation is, and will continue to be, one of the greatest challenges we face. The environment and human society are inextricably linked; they impact one another. Ecological changes affect societal power structures and vice versa. The complex interrelationship between environment and society requires attention from multiple academic disciplines and a dialogue between the sciences and humanities.
The Doctoral Program Environment and Society promotes both disciplinary depth and interdisciplinary approaches, and offers opportunities for international network-building. Based at the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society, it has been created for graduates from the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences who wish to research questions concerning the interfaces between environment and society, nature and culture. Doctoral dissertation advisors include LMU faculty members in the environmental humanities, geography, American studies, literary studies, philosophy, environmental ethics, and diverse history programs including environmental, landscape, and urban history.
